NFCAM believes that foster carers need ongoing training and support to properly deal with the special problems that children currently being placed in foster care have. Knowledge and skills are needed to help these children who have severe problems and are very demanding.

Children in care have been damaged in ways that affect their behaviour for years. They are unable to trust, lack a sense a honesty and responsibility, are sometimes anti social and rude. These children often lie and play around with the carer’s feelings who sometimes does not understand that this is coming from the child’s prior experience.

After a lot of rejections they seem to cannot accept that there are adults they can trust. That there are adults who will love them and be there for them no matter what. They sometimes jeopardize the security and stability of the foster family. It is not easy to live with such a child 24 hours a day.

This is why foster carers need ongoing training and support from professionals in this field. We make our appeal to Agenzija Appogg to provide ongoing training and support for us. In fact later this year during tne month of November NFCAM together with IFCO and Appogg are organizing a Training Seminar. More information check on website at www.malta2007.ifco.info

Another appeal we made is to have support 24 hours a day. The support we have from our social workers is till 5.00pm. Out of their own good will these social workers give us their mobile numbers but this is definitely not the way it should be done. To call 179 is just not enough for us and most of the times urgent things arise during weekends so this is when we need a social worker on call to meet some of the urgent issues that arise.
